Začínal jako střihač a kameraman, postupem času se z něj ale stal i režisér, producent, distributor a pedagog. Ačkoliv je mu stále teprve 31 let, je zjevné, že Andrea Gatopoulos patří k nejvíce činorodým postavám evropského filmového průmyslu. Vystudoval modernistickou literaturu v Římě a o filmu se vzdělával na workshopech vedených předními světovými režiséry, jakými jsou Radu Jude, Werner Herzog nebo Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Jeho projekty vynikají mimoběžnou poetikou, zkoumají tajemné, často posmutnělé kouty virtuální reality a bývají podkresleny existenciální úzkostí nebo kritikou progresivismu. Zároveň to jsou projekty, které demonstrují nové modely filmové produkce – efektivní, nízkorozpočtové, oproštěné od tradičních modelů financování.
Pásmo vybraných snímků přiblíží Andreu Gatopoulose v několika rolích. Jako režisér představí trojici svých autorských filmů. Šťastný nový rok, Jime nabízí jemnokresbu digitální izolace a v roce 2022 se stal vůbec prvním filmem zasazeným do prostředí počítačových her uvedeným na festivalu v Cannes. Eschaton Ad, uvedený o rok později v Locarnu, nabízí důmyslnou hru s divákem a oznamuje apokalyptický nástup umělé inteligence. Teorie eggregorů, zařazená do programu benátského festivalu, se odehrává v dystopické budoucnosti a prostřednictvím černobílé estetiky umělé inteligence odstiňuje intimní lovestory i svět, kde se umění ocitlo v ilegalitě.
Pestrou skladbu doplní filmy Homunculus a Nejkrásnější muž na světě, které vznikly díky existenci Gatopoulosovy avantgardní dílny Nouvelle Bug. Posledním filmem tohoto pásma budou Ztracené vzpomínky stromů, kontemplativní snímek natočený v srdci amazonského pralesa, pod nímž je Gatopoulos podepsán jako producent.
Andrea Gatopoulos povede v rámci festivalu i praktický master class věnovaný alternativním přístupům a nástrojům na poli vývoje, financování, produkce i distribuce filmů, a to v pátek 27. 2. od 11:00 v Třetím sále kina Světozor.

Film sleduje putování muže, který vyhledává kontakty s dalšími muži. Během svých cest si uvědomí, že ho lidé vnímají jako „Araba“ – nejednoznačnou, mužnou a mocnou entitu, kterou bílí gayové oslavují a francouzská policie nenávidí.
Nejkrásnější muž na světě

Rodinné tabu, chybějící příběh. Dvacet pět fotografií, chladný hlas generovaný umělou inteligencí a vřelé vzpomínky své matky využívá protagonista filmu, aby rekonstruoval příběh svého strýce Michela, který na přelomu 80. a 90. let v Itálii podlehl AIDS a závislosti na heroinu. Film zkoumá sílu paměti, význam obrazu a to, co zůstává nevyřčeno.

He started out as an editor and cinematographer but eventually began working as a director, producer, distributor, and teacher. He is just 31 years old, but Andrea Gatopoulos is clearly one of the most active figures in the European film industry today. He studied modern literature in Rome and learned about film at workshops given by leading international directors such as Radu Jude, Werner Herzog, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His projects, which stand out for their unusual poetics and explore the mysterious and often gloomy corners of virtual reality, are frequently characterized by a sense of existential angst or a critique of progressivism. At the same time, they demonstrate new models of cinematic production – efficient, low-budget, and freed from traditional models of financing.
The block of selected films presents the many different roles Andrea Gatopoulos plays, including three examples of his work as director. Happy New Year, Jim (2022), a finely sketched depiction of digital isolation, was the first film set in the world of computer games to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Eschaton Ad, shown a year later at Locarno, plays cleverly with the viewer’s mind as it announces the apocalyptic new era of artificial intelligence. The Eggregores’ Theory, which was shown at the Venice Film Festival, takes place in a dystopian future and uses a black-and-white AI aesthetic to tell an intimate love story set in a world where art has been outlawed.
Complementing this colorful selection of films are two others, Homunculus and The Most Beautiful Man in the World, that were made thanks to Gatopoulos’s Nouvelle Bug avant-garde film workshop. And the final film is The Lost Memories of Trees, a contemplative work shot in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, on which Gatopoulos was involved as producer.
On Friday, 27 February at 11:00am in Světozor’s Third Hall, Andrea Gatopoulos will hold a practical master class on alternative approaches and tools in the areas of film development, financing, production, and distribution.
