How did late socialist cinema engage with shopping, style, and gender roles within a paradoxical consumerist culture? A special double screening of Ester Krumbachová’s camp feast Murdering the Devil (1970) followed by the Polish cult classic Stanisław Bareja’s Man – Woman Wanted (1973) reveals how socialist films staged consumption, aspiration, domestic fantasy, and their contradictions.

Presented by film scholar Anastasia Mamaeva (with additional presenters to be announced). Films in Czech and Polish with English subtitles. Free entry.

The double screening continues on Friday, 12 December 2025 with a roundtable (online and at CEFRES, Prague): Consumer Cultures and Screen Imaginaries under State Socialism in Polish, Czechoslovak, and Soviet Cinema of the 1960s–80s, as part of the hybrid event Comrade Consumer: Shopping, Style, and Desire on Socialist Screens.
