Research is a never-ending process - this is also true of research into Czech cinema. The history of film and its various contexts create a lively environment, which we intervene in with our publications.

Exploring Czech film

The research that we do on our collections enables us to better understand, contextualise and access them. In processing our collections, we are expanding our knowledge in the fields of Czech cinema history, information science, (film) archiving, digital humanities, etc. We initiate and participate in interdisciplinary and international research projects.

Advisory bodies

Scientific Council

In 2018, the NFA Scientific Council was established as an advisory body for basic and applied research. The Council participates in the conception, development and coordination of research, the creation of concept documents and comments on research projects.

LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ

LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ (2023–2026) is a digital research infrastructure for language technology, arts and humanities. The aim of the project is to strengthen and expand research enriched with digital resources and tools and to support the teaching of digital humanities across the traditional humanities disciplines of the Faculty of Arts.

NAKI III - Comprehensive solutions for the care of cultural heritage in the field of game applications

The project aims to design, implement, validate and describe cultural heritage protection procedures in the form of game applications and to create appropriate technical tools for them, taking into account the needs of heritage institutions.

IP DKRVO

The Ministry of Culture provides a long-term concept for the development of the Národní filmový archiv research organisation for the years 2024–2028 based on the evaluation of the achieved research results.

Cinemas in the East Bohemian Region 1960–1990

The aim of the research project is to map the organisation and structure of the cinema network in the former East Bohemia Region. The selected territorial unit of one of the eight historical regions will serve as a case study. On its basis it will be possible to form hypotheses about the shape of the cinema system in the whole area of the Czech lands.

The 9.5 mm film format and the development of amateur and family filmmaking in the present-day Czech Republic (1922–1960)

The main aim of the research project is to critically analyse the history of Czech amateur and family film, the part that is linked to the existence of the 9.5 mm film format.
