Summary
Screenwriter Ota Hofman adapted his own novel to create this 1971 children’s film, directed by Radim Cvrček and Zdeněk Rozkopal (the latter being an architect and set designer by profession). The modern fairytale takes place just before Christmas and features a Prior department store in Bratislava in one of its “leading roles”. The main protagonists of the film are preschool friends Tomáš and Zuzana who inadvertently cause the postponement of Christmas at a fairground shooting gallery. After being distracted by the girl, the boy shoots the eponymous blue elephant, which is also the harbinger of the holiday of peace and goodwill, in the eye instead of the trunk. In order to put things right the children must obtain a new eye in the department store where they experience a range of adventures… Starring in the adult roles are Josef Hlinomaz (shooting gallery owner), Miloslav Šulc (grandpa Bertoldi) and Karel Štědrý (storekeeper Halala).
