The modern fairy tale, which Macourek returned to in the television series Arabela, became the basis for an intelligent, imaginative and witty spectacle in The Girl on the Broom, which has gained cult status among several generations of viewers. Contributing to the film's success is the then twenty-two-year-old singer Petra Cernocká, who plays Saxana with charm, insight and love. Jan Hrušínský, a popular representative of good, sensitive young men, appears in the film as Honza. Vorlíček, however, also proved to have an exceptional sense for casting supporting roles (Vladimír Menšík as the vampire janitor, Jan Kraus as the malevolent Miky, Helena Růžičková as the mad patient in the asylum...).
