About the film distribution

The source for the digitisation was film materials stored in the National Film Archive. The image was digitized from the original negative, missing parts were filled in from the duplication positive. The source for the sound digitisation was a duplication positive. The image would be digitized from the original negative on Agfa material in 4K resolution. A duplication positive was used to fill in the missing passages. The audio was digitized from the duplication positive.

The aim of the digital restoration was to make the film as close as possible to the way it was seen by the audience when it was first shown in 1964. The film therefore retains elements that were created during filming or laboratory processing and are therefore evidence of the technology and creative processes of the time.

From the surviving prints, two prints on Agfa material were selected for tonal reference. The tonality of the digitally restored film is thus based on these prints, which date from the period of the film's first release.

The restoration, supervised by the National Film Archive, took place at the Cinepost Barrandov studio in Prague in 2017.
