Cataloguing, Archiving and Exhibiting Digital Games

Central and Eastern European Historical Games Workshop 2024

Abstract

The first international conference dedicated to digital games as cultural heritage in Central and Eastern Europe will take place on 25–26 November 2024 at the Ponrepo cinema. The workshop Cataloging, Archiving and Exhibiting Digital Games is organised by the National Film Archive as part of Pixelarchiv.cz, a joint NAKI project of the NFA, FAMU and ČVUT.

The international conference Cataloging, Archiving and Exhibiting Digital Games brings to the Czech Republic for the first time the experience of leading figures in the field of interactive digital cultural heritage preservation. Keynote speakers will include Andreas Lange, President of the European Federation of Game Archives, Museums and Preservation Projects (EFGAMP) based in Berlin; Jakob Moesgaard from the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen; Natalia Kovalainen and Jukka Kovalainen from the largest private game archive Embracer in Karlstad, Sweden; and Niklas Nylund from the Finnish Game Museum in Tampere. The main presentations will be accompanied by papers from representatives of private initiatives, research projects, museums, libraries, galleries and archives from Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia. They will present the conditions and activities dedicated to the documentation, archiving and presentation of interactive cultural heritage in individual countries. In the final plenary discussion, participants from Central and Eastern Europe will attempt to propose common methods and a transnational organisation of game archiving for this region.

The conference is open to the public and admission is free. All participants must register at the entrance.
If you would like to watch the conference online on Zoom and Discord, please request access at pixelarchiv@nfa.cz. Individual presentations will be recorded and published on the National Film Archive's YouTube channel.

The workshop is organised as part of the research project Comprehensive Care for Cultural Heritage in the Field of Gaming Applications (DH23P03OVV047), funded by the NAKI III programme of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.
