Screening: East of Kodak: Foma, ORWO, Svema

This program focuses on film stocks made in postwar Eastern Europe—Agfa/ORWO, Foma, and Svema—establishing a dialogue between advertising films by film manufacturers, amateur work rooted in 1980s alternative culture, and contemporary experimental films. The program begins in the East German factory town of Wolfen, where Agfa and ORWO black-and-white and color stocks were manufactured. It moves to Czechoslovakia, home to Foma, where Agfa and ORWO were widely (if at times reluctantly) used by amateur and underground filmmakers. It concludes by considering the vibrant present-day lives of these East European stocks, as they are used by artist-run film labs to reimagine our relationship to photochemical film.
