Like Truman Capote's novel, the film has the character of a documentary reconstruction of a real event that caused a stir throughout American society. It was the case of the quadruple murder of a Kansas farmer's family, which took place in the village of Holcombe on the night of November 15-16, 1959. The film was shot with the utmost authenticity: at the actual crime scene and with actors who physically resembled the real persons. Capote himself spent hundreds of hours with convicts in prison during the writing process. He eventually became famous for a book that is not entirely typical of his literary work. The film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography and Music.
