Summary
Emerging directors and screenwriters in Czechoslovakia were often given a chance to make their mark with the production of a short film at Prague’s Barrandov film studios. This tradition continued with the making of Profesoři za školou (Teachers Playing Truant, 1975), a three-part motion picture, for which debuting directors Milan Muchna and Vladimir Blažek got together with their experienced counterpart Zbyněk Brynych. Brynych's story Jak se plaší Smrtihlav (How to Shoo the Death’s-head Moth) is a tale about the reforming of an uncompromising secondary school teacher (Jiří Pleskot). In Téma: Láska (The Theme: Love), Milan Muchna relates the story of Kateřina (Lenka Kořínková) who draws support from her work with children during conflict with her unreliable partner (Jan Drbohlav), a man who puts his sports career before teaching. Vladimir Blažek’s Aljaška (Alaska) depicts a relationship crisis which a married couple (Alois Švehlík, Zuzana Geislerová) successfully overcome in a new rural environment.
