Summary
The middle part of the Hussite trilogy, which screenwriter and director Otakar Vávra made based on literary texts by Alois Jirásek, was filmed in 1955. The biographical story of the Hussite governor follows Jan Hus and opens the way to the final part of the trilogy - Against All Odds. Like the other parts of the costume series, Vávra did not treat Jan Žižka in accordance with historical facts, but primarily in the spirit of Marxist ideology and communist propaganda. Jan Žižka of Trocnov, who took the lead in the popular movement that formed after the death of Czech King Václav IV, is thus portrayed by the experienced Zdeněk Štěpánek as a wise leader with strong social and patriotic feelings. This enables the governor and his loyalists to successfully fight the forces supported by the supporters of the malevolent King Sigismund, who is eager to usurp the Czech throne.
