Summary
Two years after the release of Kristian (1939), director Martin Frič reunited with Czechoslovak stars Oldřich Nový, Adina Mandlová and Nataša Gollová. The team managed to breathe life into this romantic comedy, which is a remake of the 1933 German film Das verliebte Hotel (The Love Hotel) by Czech director Karel Lamač (with fellow Czech Anna Ondráková in the lead role). The plot of Frič’s film also revolves around a small, neglected hotel. Hard-working Zuzana (Gollová) inherits the establishment, and ultimately manages to revive it and also win the heart of the affluent bachelor Vladimír (Nový), who thus barely avoids falling into a loveless marriage with the elegant Milada (Mandlová). One of the most celebrated First Republic-era Czechoslovak comedies, The Hotel Modrá hvězda combines the excellent performances of its stars with a screwball comedy plot, which in spite of its twists and turns marches inexorably towards a happy ending.
