Vlasta Burian owed some of his most famous film roles to director Karel Lamač, who was instrumental in shaping the comedian's star image in the 1930s. Their penultimate work together was the still fresh and cheerful Ghost will do it ( 1938). It is a loose adaptation of the play Konto X by Austrian authors Rudolf Österreicher and Rudolf Bernauer. The screenwriter Václav Wasserman was inspired mainly by its First Republic staging at the Vlasta Burian Theatre. The protagonist is a shrewd accountant and ironic glosser of social life, Jan Damián Ducháček (Vlasta Burian), who helps his boss Faukner (Ladislav Hemmer), the lawyer of an indebted family, with his financial and personal problems. Faukner's partner, Julia, was played by Adina Mandlová, who also appeared in Burian and Lamac's last film, the comedy U pokladny stál... ( 1939).
