About the film distribution

The painting was digitally restored from the original negative on Kodak material in 2016. A duplication positive was used as a secondary source to fill in the missing windows. The image was digitized at 4K resolution, the working and finishing resolution was set to 4K based on tests. The visible part of the image is defined by the standard for a projection window with an aspect ratio of 1:1.37. The film was screened in this format at the time of its first release.

In addition to the original negative, two duplication positives and two duplicate negatives, four prints on Orwo and Ferrania materials are preserved in the NFA. Of these, one was selected as the most suitable for reference of tonal presentation. The tonality of the digitised version of the film is thus based on this particular film print on the Ferrania material.

Possible sources for the sound digitisation were: sound negative, combined duplicate negative, duplicate positives and distribution prints. Based on the tests, the duplication positive was chosen as the most suitable source.
