"I want to challenge myself and see how much I can achieve in a limited environment. Therefore, I don't consider those with established credentials or widely recognized actors; I choose to work with assistant photographers. The crew consists of individuals like me, with only one or two film experiences. I want to prove that those who haven't been acknowledged can still excel under limited conditions." Edward Yang

Restored by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project at Cineteca di Bologna/L'immagine Ritrovata laboratory in association with the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique and Hou Hsiao-Hsien.

A young couple plans their future in a rapidly changing Taipei. Chin yearns to leave, while Lung, a former baseball champion, struggles after an inglorious return from America; he senses that returning abroad will not be easy. The dynamics of their relationship gradually succumb to unspoken, conflicting expectations. With exceptional directorial skill, Edward Yang captures the loneliness of life in a modern metropolis. The film also features Taiwanese cinema legend Hou Hsiao-hsien, who plays the role of Lung and also contributed as a screenwriter and co-producer. The two filmmakers shared a deep bond of friendship—Yang even went as far as to mortgage his own home to ensure the film could be completed.
