Summary

Karel Smyczek launched his highly successful directing career with Housata (Goslings), a feature film made according to Irena Charvátová's screenplay. The main protagonists of the tragicomic narrative in this 1979 release are girls resident in a boarding house attached to a college for textiles apprentices. Similarly to Forman’s Lásky jedné plavovlásky (Loves of a Blonde, 1965), the female leads in Goslings – sensitive Marie, self-confident Monika and diffident Šárka – also struggle with issues surrounding their first romantic relationships. Marie falls in love with private Oto, to whom she has been writing letters on behalf of stylistically inept Monika. When it comes to light, Marie is shunned by everybody… This is a distinctive film that references the poetic character of 1960s Czechoslovak cinema, with its credible situations and dialogues, as well as its captivating cast. The casting in fact provided opportunities for numerous young performers (Yvetta Kornová, Veronika Gajerová, Jaromíra Mílová and Jaromír Dulava).
