A Season of Classic Films
A series of silent films with contemporary music
Film was never silent. This term is used to refer to movies that had to be accompanied by live music and noise effects, because the technique of recording sound on a film strip had not yet been invented. Just as these films were accompanied at the time of their creation by pianists and ensembles with a diverse repertoire of more or less popular music, we present these films today with live contemporary music. From April to June, we will be making seven silent films available for free online with musical accompaniment from diverse genres. The curatorial selection of composers for the new music respects the silent era principle of maintaining a plurality of musical accompaniment styles. In the subsequent discussions, we will focus on topics related to silent film and programming it today.
A Season of Classic Films is a project of the Association des Cinémathèques Européennes (ACE), which aims to make screenings of films from European national and regional archives freely accessible, especially to young audiences. The Národní filmový archiv, Prague is one of twenty-two participating institutions. The project is financially supported by the EU Creative Europe program.
The first screening of the Season of Classic Films retrospective is Karel Lamač’s Bílý ráj (White Paradise) with music by the multi-instrumentalist from Brno Tomáš Vtípil. The film is a transfer of a new toned and embossed 35 mm restored print, for which a unique period nitrate print provided source material.
In the discussion Classics Today the CEO of the Národní filmový archiv, Prague will moderate a talk with guests from various branches of culture what the term “classic” means and how it should be used nowadays.
